You may have heard of the chakras, but if you don't really know what they are or how to work with them - and especially if you're too shy to ask - you aren't alone! Let's talk about what the chakras are and how you can use them to better your health, mind, and spiritual journey.
What are Chakras?
Chakras are centers of energy within the body that correspond to different physical areas and mental states. It originated in India between 1500 and 500 BC, and is one of the most popular systems for interacting with the body's energy centers in the world today.
In Sanskrit, "chakra" translates to "wheel", and this is what the chakras are commonly seen as - wheels or spirals of energy eminating out from the body at certain points. Energy workers interact with these spots to initiate change on all levels.
Interestingly, the chakras also seem to align to major systems and clusters of nerves within the body, long before we ever had a way of seeing those things!
The Seven Major Chakras
Though there are dozens of energy points and centers within and surrounding the body, in the Indian Chakra system, there are 7 main chakras that run in a line from the tailbone to the top of the head.
The first is the Root Chakra, located at the very bottom aspect of the tailbone, and corresponds to feelings of groundedness, stability, and safety.
The second is the Sacral Chakra, located below the naval, and corresponds to creativity, fertility, & sexual health.
The third is the Solar Plexus Chakra, located between the naval and the bottom of the ribcage, and corresponds to personal power, self esteem, willpower, and confidence.
The fourth is the Heart Chakra, located at the breastbone in line with the heart, and corresponds to emotional health, relationships (both romantic and otherwise), self love, and compassion.
The fifth is the Throat Chakra, located at the base of the throat, and corresponds to communication, personal truth, and expression.
The sixth is the Third Eye Chakra, located above the browbone, and corresponds to intuition, insight, and imagination.
The seventh is the Crown Chakra, located at the very top of the head, and corresponds to our connection to the universe, higher powers, spirituality, and our life's purpose.
The Effects of the Chakras
When the energy within us is flowing and moving well, the chakras are open and spinning. This means we're well adjusted and interacting with all these spheres of life and influence well, we're healthy, and we're experiencing abundance in all it's forms.
But when a chakra is blocked, this can cause discomfort, anxiety, emotional imbalance, and a stagnation in the areas that chakra corresponds to. Sometimes, if left unchecked, these things can play a factor in physical health as well.
The goal is to have healthy, open, spinning chakras to assure that our lives are on track, our purpose is clear, and we're living in our highest and best truth.
How to Use the Chakras for Healing
Healing and aligning our energy through the chakra system uses tools and techniques like meditation, crystal vibrations, tuning forks and other sound techniques, and energy healing from experienced practitioners to unblock stagnation and get the flow moving again.
It's important to remember that our bodies have natural healing ability - the brain is a powerful organ that can adjust and divert energy as needed, and the immune system is working constantly to keep us healthy. Healing sessions that target the chakras are wonderful support activities to ensure the body can do it's healing work.
