The sun is out, the days are long, and whether you’re basking in the warmth or trying not to melt into a puddle of sunscreen and iced tea, summer brings a whole new set of herbal needs—and magical possibilities.

Here at Tangled Roots Herbal, we’re embracing the season with five of our favorite summer herbs that do double duty: they soothe your body and lift your spirit—and they're perfect for working into a little Solstice magic, too.

🌼 Calendula – The Star of Summer

Calendula is basically sunshine in petal form. Its bright, golden blossoms have been used for centuries to support healthy, glowing skin—from minor sunburns and bug bites to rashes and irritation. Infused in oils, teas, or salves, calendula is a summer staple you’ll want to keep on hand.

Energetically, calendula carries the solar essence of joy, healing, and radiant clarity. It uplifts and protects, making it perfect for rituals of illumination and release.

Work with it:

  • Add dried petals to a Solstice tea blend (we love it with tulsi, rose, and peppermint!)

  • Infuse in oil for a post-sun skin salve

  • Use in your Solstice altar or spell jar to call in joy and clarity

🌿 Tulsi (Holy Basil) – Your Summer Stress Shield

Tulsi is your herbal chill pill. This adaptogenic herb helps regulate stress, uplift mood, and balance your energy when the heat (literal and emotional) starts getting to you. Bonus? It makes an absolutely delicious iced tea.

Work with it:

  • Brew strong and pour over ice with a splash of lemon

  • Blend with chamomile and ginger for digestive support

  • Add to a solstice meditation tea blend for grounding

🌿 Peppermint – For Cooling Off (and Waking Up)

If you’ve ever wanted to feel like you’re walking around with a personal fan, peppermint is your herb. Great for digestion, focus, and headaches—and energetically, it clears stagnation and helps you move forward when you feel stuck.

Work with it:

  • Sip iced peppermint tea after a sweaty hike (or meltdown)

  • Use in a cooling foot soak or compress

  • Add to an energetic clearing spray for clarity + pep

🌹 Rose – For the Heart and the Heat

Rose isn’t just a pretty face—it’s a powerhouse for soothing irritated skin and frayed nerves. It’s also the ultimate heart healer, making it a gorgeous addition to your solstice rituals of self-love, gratitude, or gentle release.

Work with it:

  • Use rose water as a toner or linen spray

  • Add petals to ritual baths or spell sachets

  • Blend with tulsi and calendula for an emotionally supportive tea

✨ St. John’s Wort – For Solstice Light & Protection

A classic summer solstice herb, St. John’s Wort has long been used for protection, light, and emotional resilience. It’s associated with the sun and midsummer magic and is traditionally harvested on the solstice.

Work with it:

  • Create a solstice charm with dried herb + sun-charged crystals

  • Use a solar infusion of the oil topically for aches (with sun-safety precautions!)

  • Add a pinch to a fire-safe bowl during your Solstice ritual for strength + light
